FarmVille is an agriculture-simulation social game originally developed and published by Zynga. It first launched on Facebook on June 19, 2009, and quickly became one of the most-played social games in history.
Players manage a virtual farm: plowing land, planting and harvesting crops, raising livestock, and building structures. Progress happens in real time rather than in-game time — a crop that takes two hours to grow will genuinely be ready in two real-world hours, encouraging players to check back throughout the day.
FarmVille was built around Facebook's social graph. Visiting neighboring farms, sending and receiving gifts, and helping friends with tasks were core to the experience, and this social loop was a major reason the game spread so quickly in its first year.
