FarmVille ran on multiple currencies, most notably:
- Farm Coins — the main, freely-earned currency. Coins came from harvesting crops, trees, and animal goods, or from selling items back to the game.
- Farm Cash — the premium currency, purchased with real money (credit card or PayPal) and used for the game's higher-tier items: certain buildings, decorations, and expansions were Farm Cash-only.
- Coconuts and Jade Coins — special currencies tied to specific limited-time expansions/events rather than the base game.
Experience (XP) is earned by planting, harvesting, building, buying from the Market, and helping neighbors' farms. Accumulating enough XP raises a player's level, unlocking new Market items — and each time a player leveled up, they were also awarded one unit of Farm Cash as a bonus.
Levels functioned as the game's main progression gate: a large share of the Market catalog (certain seeds, animals, and buildings) was locked behind a minimum player level, so leveling up was directly tied to what a farm could contain.
