The core gameplay loop in FarmVille is: plow, plant, wait, harvest.
Land must be plowed before it can be planted. Once a crop is planted, it grows on a real-world timer — some crops are ready in minutes, others take many hours or even days. When a crop is ready, harvesting it awards coins and XP.
If a crop is left too long after it's ready, it withers and can no longer be harvested for its full reward, so timing return visits around crop growth times was a core part of the play pattern.
After harvesting, land becomes "fallow" — recently harvested and temporarily unusable — and must be re-plowed before it can be planted again.
Crops are generally split into a few practical categories:
- Fast crops (like strawberries) mature quickly and give a higher XP-per-hour rate, favored for active leveling.
- Slow, seasonal crops (like wheat) take much longer but pay out more coins overall.
- Trees give a slow, steady trickle of coins and XP and, unlike regular crops, do not wither if left unharvested.
